Crouch End Festival Chorus, under its conductor David Temple, performs Mozart’s Requiem, one of the greatest works in the choral repertoire. Commissioned in 1791 when the composer’s health was failing, Mozart created a work which was completed after his death by Süssmayr and contains some of his most sublime and evocative music. The choir then presents the world premiere of a work by Jessica Curry, renowned for her award-winning scores for computer games. Echo is based on an evocative Christina Rossetti poem combining passion and mystery. Completing the programme is one of Brahms’s greatest choral pieces, the Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny).

This concert features the music of siblings Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn. The most substantial work is Felix’s Die erste Walpurgisnacht, a dramatic cantata set on a dark mountain where the Druids and Christians are in conflict. Stylistically the music looks back to Haydn and forwards to Wagner and Mahler. Vom Himmel hoch is a beautiful work very much in the style of Felix’s great inspiration, JS Bach. Fanny’s works include an exquisite a cappella part song and the more notable Hiob (Job) Cantata for chorus, soloists and orchestra. The programme is completed with Felix’s sumptuous Psalm 42 (As pants the hart for cooling streams…)

In the final movement he breaks the boundaries of the orchestra itself, invoking the human voice to share his message of brotherhood. Ralph Vaughan Williams was born 150 years ago in 1872. His epic work A Sea Symphony from 1910 is the focus of this concert. It features the poetry of Walt Whitman and was the piece which truly established Ralph Vaughan Williams as a composer.
The concert will start with Gloria by Francis Poulenc. This brilliant and quirky setting was partly inspired by the composer watching monks playing football.
And rounding off the full programme, supporting the choir’s commitment to the inclusion of women composers in its concerts, will be Crossing the Bar by American composer Rani Arbo.

Beethoven’s primary concern in his radiant Mass in C major was ‘not God or princes, but the human being entering the church.’ A combination of spirituality and humanity can be felt in almost every bar of the piece, which treated the text and sentiments of the Mass as they had never been treated before.
