Crouch End Festival Chorus will enjoy a week of choral music history in April 2019 with a concert involving one of the world’s most popular works – Handel’s Messiah – and another featuring the first performance of Hubert Parry’s Judith oratorio in London for 130 years.
The choir under music director David Temple has a reputation for singing a wide range of works and the concert at St John's Smith Square on Saturday 6th April will be only the third full performance of Georg Frideric Handel’s popular masterpiece in the 35-year history of the choir.
The chorus will be joined by the Bach Camerata and soloists Jessica Cale, Diana Moore, Sam Furness and Benjamin Bevan plus accompanist Peter Jaekel on the organ for the choir’s first Messiah since 2005.
Although in recent times Messiah has become associated with Christmas, it was originally intended for performance in Holy Week when it was first performed in 1742.
"By performing the work at this time of year, in a building that Handel would have known, singing at baroque pitch and accompanied by instruments from the period of composition, we aim to bring back some of the excitement of its earliest performances," Temple said.
David has also been preparing the choir for the first London performance of Judith since 1889 at the Royal Festival Hall under the baton of William Vann on Wednesday 3rd April.
Parry is better known for his choral song Jerusalem and anthem I was Glad but Judith contains the melody that later, under the name Repton, became the famous hymn Dear Lord and Father of Mankind. The work has largely been forgotten and neglected for a century.
Vann will conduct the London Mozart Players with soloists Sarah Fox, Kathryn Rudge, Toby Spence and Henry Waddington.
